GPS Navigation for Visually Impaired

We created a mobile app for visually impaired and color-blind users, featuring robust navigation options. The app includes accessibility features, announcement capabilities, and three themes. It offers tailored directions for pedestrians and vehicles, with heads-up announcements for turns and obstacles. The app automatically redirects users from obstructive paths and provides updated turn information if they deviate. To enhance accessibility, key navigation elements are present on every screen. Foursquare provides well-known points of interest (POIs), and users can add and share their own POIs via email and Airdrop on iOS.

Additionally, iOS users benefit from smart search through Apple Map Kit.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions you may have in accessibility development

Digital accessibility is the practice of making digital products, such as websites, web applications, or mobile applications, accessible to people with various disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, and neurological disabilities. For instance, individuals with vision impairment using a screen reader to listen to content instead of viewing it, or a person who has hearing difficulty using captions to read content in a video, comes under Digital Accessibility.

To ensure your products are accessible, we recommend integrating accessibility practices into your software development process from design to launch. Audits should be performed during major releases or modifications and will differ depending on the schedule of release. Most companies perform audits for every new product release and on an annual or bi-annual basis for existing products.

Digital accessibility can be measured based on compliance with the pass criteria in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Industry-standard Accessibility Conformance Reports, such as the Voluntary Product Assessment Template (VPAT) or WCAG report, document the pass or fail status of the product. Software like scanning/monitoring tools can also illustrate accessibility progress over time. It is worth noting that software tools can only identify 30-40% of possible accessibility issues, and manual testing is required to document accessibility accurately over time.

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community where organizers develop international standards for the Web. The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) is one initiative that the W3C launched to make the internet accessible for people with disabilities. Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are the guidelines created by WAI for developers, designers, and people in tech to use every single day as a benchmark for web accessibility.

We recommend organizations to adhere to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 at different levels of compliance. This means it needs to meet all criteria at the A and AA levels. You will have to eventually adopt the WCAG 2.1 standards, which are a superset of WCAG 2.0. If your website can adopt any of the 2.1 guidelines, that is encouraged.
